Welcome to Year 5
Literacy – Power of Reading
This year we have enhanced the way we teach literacy by following the ‘Power of Reading’ scheme. This style of teaching allows us to base our learning around a novel linked to our topic. We hope to instil a love of reading in our children by using drama and writing activities to develop their understanding of what they read.
Autumn 1: Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce
Autumn 2: Shakleton’s Journey by William Grill
Spring 1: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Spring 2: Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick
Summer 2: Varmints by Helen Ward
Summer 2: The Adventures of Odyseus by Hugh Lupton
In year 5 pupils will be consolidating their knowledge of the 4 operations and applying this knowledge in problem solving contexts. They will work towards knowing their times tables fluently up to 12 times 12. All children have a maths ‘passport’ that they are working on. The mental skills the children learn range from doubling and halving numbers to knowing all of their multiplication and division facts. Ask any of our children and they will tell you what their current target is.
Year 5 has a greater emphasis on fractions including adding fractions, subtracting fractions, finding equivalent fractions and ordering fractions. Pupils will also learn to use fractions, decimals and percentages.
The Connected Curriculum in Year 5 is varied and engaging. The following topics are covered and incorporate History and Geography skills:
Autumn 1: To Infinity and Beyond
Autumn 2: The Big Freeze
Spring 1: Chocorific
Spring 2: Off with your head
Summer 2: Heal the World
Summer 2: Chariots, Coliseums and Cyclops
Home learning is set every Friday with the expectation that it is return by the following Wednesday. Home learning includes spelling words, maths revision and a research task.
